Dragan Simic
Dragan Simic was born in Nis, Yugoslavia in 1960, into the artistic family of Gina, his mother and Zile, his father.
Meal times in this household were large gatherings of relatives and friends and were filled with laughter and arguements focused on artistic expression and creativity. Dragan and his older brother were encouraged to be passionate, political and controversial whilst developing their artistic abilities.
Dragan immigrated to Australia in 1984 to explore a less homogenized frontier. He attained his Diploma of Fine Arts from the University of Art, in Perth. Dragan’s first exhibition in Melbourne showed development of the use of colour, influenced by the stronger light of a warmer climate.
Dragan’s primary influences were the works of Matisse, Modigliani and Picasso, and it shines through in many of his works. He has had exhibitions and showings both solo and with other new artists that have become known as 'names to collect'.
In Dragan’s latest series “ISM”, he looks at how words and symbolism leave incredible marks on our lives. The skins twist and turmoil is revisited in each image. They seem to both unravel and knot at the same time.
Now settled in Brisbane, Dragan has decided to focus full-time on the development of his art and the unusual expression of his style.
‘It is the convolution of the revolution.’
